Major/Common Races
Humans:
One of the most widespread races in the galaxy, humans are known for their intuition and tenacity. They lack the natural intellect of the Shadar, the brutality of the Skalotions, and the muscle of the Lokhan, but they do possess stubbornness, and an uncanny ability to survive in a number of climates and disadvantageous situations. They also are very good explorers. Humans are the best colonizers out of all the races, only beating the Shadar by a sliver.
Originating from the planet Alma, humanity developed about as swiftly as one would expect. The oldest recorded historical record dates back 7.2 million years. The tablet retells the tale of a great war between many tribes, who fought over possession of a rare bird's wings, which they believed could magically grant a man the power to fly. Mankind has, as far back as their history goes, always desired to fly. About two million years later, they got their wish. The first human-made airplane was invented, and ideas about mechanical flight increased exponentially in number. Eight thousand years after that, they managed to create the FTL Engine, a relatively short time after the Shadar did. This eventually resulted in the two races making first contact. These two races, in turn, made contact with others, and used their shared natural talent for exploration and colonization to fill the galaxy with their presence.
During the Era of Conquest, humanity had its own empire, much like the Shadar. Other races were forced to unite with others to form their own factions, but humanity's influence was far spread enough by that point to be considered a faction of its own.
Nowadays, most humans can be found in areas under the dominion of the UER or the GDS. There are also a great deal of human colonies in the Lawless Frontier, but the majority still stick around the more controlled areas of space.
Shadar:
The blue or gray skinned, blonde or white haired original inhabitants of Shadan. They possess a natural talent for linguistics and calculation. They are always formal, often to the point where they come off as outright cold and robotic. A conversation with the average shadar can be described as talking with a high-profile businessman or attorney. Alongside humans, they have one of strongest presences in the galaxy. This is because Shadar culture emphasizes heavily on personal success and wealth. A shadar that ends up on some sort of government council isn't praised for his efforts; it's the minimum standard. It's merely what is expected of him. A shadar who ends up as a bartender, however, is shunned by the rest of his kin, who likely and literally spit on his face in disgust.
The imperial line of the U.E.R is composed nearly entirely of Shadar. Only once has a non-Shadar ever become Emperor of Rorduk.
Skalotions:
"Looking at a Skalotion is like looking at a thick, walking, talking skeleton," stated Grell Vander, the first human to make contact with the species. Skalotions have been around for a long time, though not not nearly as long as the Dolish or the Rachani. They originated from a system somewhere in the Lawless Frontier, though exactly where in that sector is anyone's guess. As stated by mr. Vander, their physical appearance slightly resembles that of a human skeleton, though to call them "all-bones" would be inaccurate. A thick exoskeleton covers the skalotion body with hard, bone-like plates. Underneath these plates are heavy muscles that on average slightly surpass the strength found in an average, unenhanced human. Their heads are the most skeletal feature on their bodies. They can be described as human skulls with sharper, larger teeth, fully intact black eyes, and two tongues inside the mouth. Most skalotions are hairless, though some do have thin, but abundant, stringy hairs protruding from the head.
Skalotion culture, having developed in the Lawless Frontier, is very warlike and violent. This is not to say that all skalotions are bad people, but most have a violent temperament. In skalotion culture, success isn't measured by any conceivable means other than the ability to do what you want, when you want, and set a lot of things on fire along the way. The species has a particular fascination with explosions, burning, and general destruction, which is why most of them dedicate their lives to some sort of destructive practice. A vast majority of demolition work in the galaxy is performed by skalotion workers. Skalotions who do not find satisfaction in demolition work are likely to join private military bands as explosives experts.
Skalotions count as a major race due to how many of them there are. While there only a fair amount of them in the U.E.R and the G.D.S, most of the Lawless Frontier's population is actually comprised purely of Skalotions.
Dolish:
The Dolish are one of the earliest races in the galaxy, if not the earliest, to achieve faster than light speed travel. Standing at 4 foot nothing on average, you wouldn't think that these green-skinned, bearded, gnome-like creatures have been traveling through space for so long that almost all records of their earliest origins have been lost.
The Dolish, as a race, have developed into technological geniuses. While the Shadar may view themselves as superior politicians, even they will admit that the Dolish's talent for creating and using machinery far exceeds their natural capabilities.
Minor/Uncommon Races
Lokhan:
Tall, hulking, formerly tribal, beetle-like creatures that originated in the Seraph systems. Their glowing visor-like eyes tend to sometimes make people think they are wearing some kind of helmet until they spot the very real and sharp pincers protruding from their mouths. A while after making first contact with them, Shadar immigrants took it upon themselves to teach the Lokhan about civilization. They adjusted quickly to modern culture, if a more than a bit roughly. Wars broke out amongst Lokhan tribes over technology. Females and infants were often captured and tortured, and only released in exchange for tech. this eventually led to the near-complete abandonment of tribal society among the Lokhan.
Nowadays, most Lokhan either work alongside Skalotions in construction work or as mercenaries. In combat, they are powerhouses, capable of wielding a variety of heavy weapons efficiently. They prefer to use large melee weapons if they can. Because of their thick exoskeletons, they make great shock troopers.
Rachani:
A twelve-legged race of insectoid beings with humanoid level intelligence. The similarities with humanoids stop there, however, as their bodies are clearly not humanoid in the slightest. They can be compared to spiders in most respects. They have eight eyes, very soft mouths, and are capable of climbing walls with their many legs. However, they can not shoot webs, or anything like that.
Temperamentally, Rachani are curious, but often timid. They lack the natural tools necessary to wield most modern weapons, and while they are quite capable of defending themselves, they prefer to avoid conflict when they can. They are clever thinkers, which helps them avoid conflict in the long run. Both the U.E.R and the G.D.S militaries consult Rachani regularly, since much of their knowledge on how to avoid conflict actually proves beneficial to black ops missions where stealth is key. It is even rumored that both governments have a number of Rachani assassins and spies.
They share a symbiotic relationship with the Dolish, who provide them with most of their technology and enahncements. This relationship between the two species has existed for literally billions of years, reaching all the way back before recorded Dolish history. They are assumed to have originated from the same home planet as the Dolish, though this is just a widely believed theory.
Vaktus:
Mystali:
The Mystali are rare, rare creatures who's beauty is only mastered by their mystery. They are the only known race in the galaxy in which every single member is capable of using magic. Because of their rarity, and their ability to control a force that the common man does not even believe exists, few people know of their existence. They often take the guise of a member of another species, though their true forms resemble that of a glowing human with skin that can practically be any color of the rainbow.
Their motives are a mystery. Those who have been successfully cornered and questions merely state that they serve "magic", though they are unsure why they do, or what they even mean by it. All they know is that they have a natural desire to protect people who are capable of using magic. Their origin is a mystery even to them. So far, over 500 Mystali have been found across the galaxy, none of them sure of how they came to be, or why they feel compelled to protect the magically blessed/cursed.
As a side note, they seem to hold a natural fear and hatred for Type-5 E.A.T.Us. This may be because of the Type-5 model's unusual resistance to magic. However, they also seem to have a natural sense of pity for Type 4s and below, for unknown reasons. They seem neutral towards Type-6 models.
Half-Breeds:
E.A.T.Us:
The U.E.R's (or United Empire of Rorduk's) line of Experimental Augmented Tactical Units are essentially super soldiers that are made by taking living humanoid creatures, dissecting them and rebuilding them until only a mere fraction of their former selves remain. The types of people unfortunate enough to undergo this procedure has shifted over the years. At first, only brave or suicidal volunteers were permitted to become E.A.T.Us. After the U.E.R government realized that there weren't enough citizens willing to undergo the transformation, they forced prisoners who were fated to live life in prison or face execution to fill the slots. A while after, when war broke out with the G.D.S (Galactic Democracy of Seraph), the U.E.R was forced to draft people into the war, many of whom became E.A.T.Us in the process. At present, the U.E.R only allows accomplished military personnel to become a E.A.T.Us.
Nearly everyone agrees that being an E.A.T.U is in no way a blessing. The process forces the subject of transformation to give up nearly their entire being to become the super soldier desired by the U.E.R. The unfortunate truth, says Ulgrith Sadarius (current emperor of the U.E.R), is that these super soldiers, while necessary to uphold the values and defense of the Empire, are undoubtedly a crime against nature. No one becomes an E.A.T.U without losing something. In the end, it is almost never worth it for the poor soul who either agrees or is forced to become the living representation of the U.E.R's might.
There are several different models of E.A.T.Us. Once a new type of E.A.T.U is invented, the old ones become obsolete, and are often put on ice until the U.E.R government manages to find some use for them. Each different type of E.A.T.U is identified with a number. The different types of E.A.T.Us are listed below.
Type-1: Clunky, inefficient, and hard to consider alive in any way or form. The Type-1 E.A.T.Us were the first to be made, and can be considered failed experiments at best, and walking abominations at worst. All but their basic motor functions are utilizable, and even then, the human brain inside the hard, metal casing is incapable of properly controlling its artificial body properly. All Type-1s broke down but 20 minutes after being activated. Type-1s are considered failed prototypes, and there is not a one that still is up and working.
Type-2: Very similar to the Type-1, except that the brain is properly able to move its mechanical body as intended, and are capable of wielding heavy fire-arms effectively. However, Type-2s are still clunky, lack any form of emotion or sense of self, and can only be effectively utilized as shock troopers.
Type-3: Type-3s are the units that truly showed the galaxy the E.A.T.Us deadly potential. Type-3s, much like Type-1 and 2s, are mechanical in nearly all aspects. However, their capabilities have been broadened extensively, and are capable of performing a number of tasks that are beneficial for a variety of military operations. To this day, Type-3s are still sometimes used to assassinate high profile targets wanted dead by the U.E.R.
Type-4: Type-4s were the first units designed to ever have any small shred of emotion left within them, and they're all the worse off for it. Living as a Type-4 is very much like being paralyzed. The true you is in many ways still working, but you have to rely on machinery to communicate in any way, shape or form. A Type-4s emotions and sense of self, while still active, are somewhat deadened. They can feel, but it is a struggle for them to feel anything beyond what they were intended to feel. Strong emotions like love and hatred are purposefully repressed by the brain, thanks to some biological modifications made to it. Out of all of the Types, a Type-4 perhaps is the most pitiful.
Type-4s have mostly mechanical bodies, but appear human in several ways on the outside. They have synthetic skin, which has creases in it that make body parts look as if they have been glued together in several places. This actually isn't all that inaccurate to say, since their body parts are in fact put together piece by piece. Type 4s all have at least one weapon that is permanently attached to them. Whether this weapon can be concealed inside the E.A.T.Us body or is permanently attached to the exterior in some way varies depending on the specific unit.
Type-5: The Type-5 E.A.T.U is quite possibly one of the most costly and devastating things that the U.E.R has ever made. Unlike all other Types, the Type-5 relies almost solely on biological augmentations and enhancements. The body parts for Type-5s were synthetically grown in labs. Like other models, these parts replace most of the living subjects normal body parts, giving them the same skin-creases as Type-4s. They retain all of their emotions, and can think, react, plan, move, fight, and generally operate better than most normal living creatures can. They also are capable of fighting as effectively as the Types preceding them. In addition, like Type-4s, they always have a weapon permanently attached to their body. In the Type-5s case, the weapon is attached to a mechanical device attached to the arm that closely resembles a metal bracer.
However, there is a fatal flaw in their design. The Type-5s, who are designed for killing and only killing, naturally develop a desire to kill, which suits their purpose. This desire grows into an addiction, and eventually a need. All Type-5s eventually develop a need to kill. There is absolutely no avoiding it. This eventually caused nearly all the Type-5s to turn rogue at one point or another, and degrade into mad, death-obsessed, psychotic killers. Friend or foe, they began firing at every living creature in sight. The U.E.R was forced to hunt them down and destroy them as soon as they could. By the time they managed to put most of them down, they had already lost literally millions of soldiers to them, due to one particular incident where a Type-5 managed to gain control of a capital cruiser and launched a Purger (a now-banned kind of incendiary weapon capable of destroying an entire planet within a half a week) toward the global military base planet Heraphust.
While most Type-5s have been put down, there are at least 4 still roaming the galaxy at present. An outlaw of the Lawless Frontier, who locals simply refer to as The Man in the Duster Jacket ("Duster" for short), has recently been identified as one of them.
Type-6: The most recent model of E.A.T.U is both a step forward, and a step back. For the Type-6, U.E.R scientists abandoned the concept of relying mostly on biological enhancements, and instead, using a combination of mechanical and biological enhancements. They are the most "humane" model of E.A.T.U to be made so far, since their emotions, while kept in check via brain enhancement, are not completely suppressed. A Type-6 carries the temperament of valiant knight who wishes to serve his country (the U.E.R) and his lord (the emperor). They are still capable of enjoying life, though not perhaps as deeply as they were when they were still "normal". They are as capable as Type 4s and 5s, all the while remaining balanced and mentally stable.
