Chapter 1: Convergence (Pg 1 - 19)"Day before festival day and ain't nobody talkin' to the wolf guy."
-Vydunas Kievu Act I - "Vydunas 2012"In the town of Vindictus, a festival is being held, to celebrate the independence of Vindictus. In the town plaza, there is a large fountain, around which is the center of the town. In this plaza, a battle is starting. A battle that will converge multiple fates together, and intertwine them in a tangled weave. Vydunas Kievu, a wolfen from the northern tribes, has come to the town in anticipation of this huge festival, and the food it has to offer. He meets with Veronica Sienna, a maiden with a love for blood, who has come for her own reasons. The two have a quick chat about the fate of her home, Platuna, before Drago "Bloodhound" Mayorovich interrupts them, eager for a new challenge. The bloodthirsty Veronica and amused Vydunas are only happy to oblige. As the battle unfolds, a sickly priest watches from afar, on a bench close to the fountain. Surprised by someone behind him, a scylla, a woman with an octopus body for a lower half, introduces herself as Kali Maliden. Likewise, the priest introduces himself with a gentle smile as Maxwell Aene, better known as Max. They silently watch the battle unfold, although Max is obviously displeased with the violence taking place on festival day, and tries to stop it with no avail. Eventually, the battle reaches its peak, with no side taking a clear edge. Vindictus Templars led by Caius Clovis appear, and quickly surround everyone in the plaza. To the shock of the bystanders, the three combatants quickly kill several of the guards, provoking Caius to order their capture at all costs. The three quickly make a break for it, with Veronica eagerly attacking the battle-hungry Caius. The pointless bloodshed and previous murder push Max to the edge however, and he weakly manages to deflect Veronica's attack, to both her and Caius' displeasure. Veronica notes his face, but realizes that the numbers are against her. Drago creates a hole in the guard's formation, allowing Veronica and Vydunas to flee, with the condition that Veronica will continue their glorious battle later. Max, due to the efforts in blocking the attack and his own sick nature, faints, with Kali watching over him. Caius and the prince of Vindictus, Victorio, take the priest to the hospital, while arresting Drago immediately. Vydunas and Veronica regroup in the inn, where they quickly procure rooms and head upstairs. Vydunas informs her a bit about the struggle between his people in the north, and the kingdom of Landiel, before both agree that they should get some rest. Meanwhile, Max awakens in a hospital, where he has a brief chat with seemingly no one. A figure almost completely identical to him appears, called Inner, in a form similar to that of a spirit. He dissipates after a worried Kali comes to check on him, and Max reassures her that he will ready for the festival tomorrow. Act II - "Undead Surge"Veronica, Vydunas awake in the inn, and meet outside in the hall. Vydunas, for some reason, has shed all of his fur overnight, and now resembles a human more closely. Although neither knows the reason for this, they both agree that it is convenient, as Vydunas will easily evade the guards now. Both go their separate ways, exploring what the festival has to offer. Likewise, Max and Kali leave together from the hospital to sightsee around the festival, marveling at what the town has to offer. However, Max runs into a fortune teller, who offers to divine their fates. An enthusiastic Kali and reluctant Max agree, although the spirit, Inner, has a strange suspicion about the fortune teller. The fortune teller begins to read Kali's fortune. He noted that she would soon go on a difficult journey, that she would get past with her strength. However, she will later have to make an unexpected choice that will bring an end to someone, or something. Kali remarks with a smile, that she is not afraid of death, a comment that surprises both Max and the Fortune Teller. Meanwhile, Vydunas, Veronica and some newcomers explore the festival grounds, intrigued by what there is to offer. It is seemingly a peaceful day... before all hell breaks loose. A strange man stumbles onto the festival grounds and begins devouring and biting the villagers at random. This strange madness seems to spread at an astonishing rate, until the craving for human blood has spread to almost the entire village. Almost everyone has turned into a zombie. Vydunas, Veronica, and a cloaked doll-girl possessed by a devil, named Priscilla, begin to combat the horde of zombies in one part of the town with some help from other passing travelers, Riley and Oswell. While Vydunas is altogether none too pleased with the bloodshed, Veronica is overjoyed at the chance for her blades to sink into flesh and goes berserk on the nearby zombies, something that Priscilla watches with admiring eyes. In another part of town, Kali, Max and the mysterious fortune teller have been surrounded. While Kali proves herself to be more than capable of protecting herself against the swarm, Max is defenseless, and nearly meets his end before the fortune teller shows an unusual power. The fortune teller summons what seems to be an oversized grim reaper, who cleaves any undead that come near the two with devastating efficiency. However, in the middle of the battle, the fortune teller disappears out of nowhere, just as two particularly powerful undead appear to combat both groups. Max's group is seemingly overwhelmed, before Max gets Kali to break a small black cross pendant charm on his right wrist. Once broken, the spirit Inner takes control of his body, and he disposes of the remaining undead in their area with little trouble. A huge, gargantuan zombie with high combative properties appears to attack Vydunas' group. Although it proves to be a difficult battle, they eventually bring down the zombie with group cooperation. Kali and Max meet up with this group after hearing of some commotion, and a hasty introduction is given for everyone present, before everyone agrees it would be in their best interest to head back to the inn. Act III - "Brief Respite"The group has a few words while returning to the inn, but the majority of them are too tired to say much. As they return, they all receive complimentary rooms in the inn for the work they did in helping the town, something that they each take gratefully. Before they split up to leave for their rooms, Vydunas leaves them with a thought; tomorrow he is headed to Landiel, to discover any answers of what had just happened. Although most agree to go with him, they decide to wait until tomorrow to make any decisions. Priscilla, has quickly become interested in Veronica, who has decided to go with the wolfen. Priscilla admits her fascination with the bloody maiden, who realizes that the doll girl could prove rather useful in their journey. They both return to their rooms, as well as Vydunas and Oswell, who have had a brief conversation. However, Grant Kattler, a myserious man with an arsenal of weapons, is prepared for one of them. He quickly catches Priscilla by surprise, who has reverted into an odd slime girl. The odd-looking assassin asks for three reasons why he shouldn't kill Priscilla right there and now, evidently realizing that there is a devil inside of her. Priscilla responds that she hates the devil just as much as he does, and that she still has the will to live. Silently, the mutant assassin acknowledges that this is enough for him to let her go, and the two discuss a plan to remove the devil inside of her without him knowing. He disappears into the night, leaving her alone. Meanwhile, Kali returned to the inn alone. Max had stayed behind to help any stragglers in the town, with his healing abilities. The sickly priest returns exhausted, and gratefully takes a room key from the innkeeper before going to his room. He's tired enough to not realize, even going in his room, that someone is already in the bath. An awkward moment of embarrassment ensues between Max and Kali, before Max quickly apologizes and waits outside. Kali then asks Max if there is another person inside of him. Max admits that he used to be an exorcist of the Order of Erlosung, but due to an unfortunate exorcism, the spirit known as Inner ended up possessing him instead, with no memories of his past life. Max then begins coughing up blood violently, and Inner explains to the worried Kali that the seal keeping Inner and Max's existence, also saps Max's life energy at a quick rate. If Inner is not exorcised, then Max only has a year left to live. Kali pledges to help Max no matter what happens, and Inner admits that only two people have ever managed to release Max's seal, and Kali is one of them. Max silently fades to slumber, and a smiling Kali sleeps right next to him.
