? ? ?
It was often considered a mystery, how in Kyril, so many people could go missing, seemingly under the radar. Some vanished as though they had been brutally murdered, blood and gore strewn around the scene of the crime. Some vanished without the scantest piece of evidence for even the most competent authorities to follow. The perpetrator was always immaculate, and people eventually because to stop taking notice. Even when investigated, these mysterious murdered or kidnappings never yielded any significant results.
It was from these that Kross Daemos drew his subjects. His methods were efficient, and he always got his subject, whether it was alive or dead.
"... No response to that chemical agent. Vital signs are... still stable. Interesting." As Kross moved around the cylindrical tube containing his latest specimen, he quietly wrote on a high tech tablet, documenting his observations. The subject's hair color, skin color, gender, current status; anything that he could consider a variable. In this case, the subject was a currently living, and reasonably healthy girl. Gender wasn't a particular issue in his current experiment, and it was easy to find a suitable subject in Grand Divide before the chaos had broken out. After all... any sane person would assume she was dead. He wasn't one for leaving evidence, but the opportunity had been too good to pass up.
"...Hmm." Kross tucked his tablet under his arm, walking back to his desk, "... Is he coming today? ... says here he is. Wonderful. Distraction. Perhaps he can lend one of his lackeys as an assistant this time."
The sound of footsteps echoed off of the metal floor, as Kross walked back over to his latest subject, staring down at her. His current experiment was... well, admittedly no worse than what Boa had done to his ever so intriguing pawns, and yet... he was feeling something. Something off.
"Ah. And yet again, that obnoxious worry... A bother. Truly. Well, at the very least, I should be breaking the monotony for her." Yes... after all, each of his experiments did the greatest of things; bring new knowledge into his world.

There were heavy foot steps as well as a buzzing sound approaching from behind Kross. Coming towards him was the man in the burning black cloak, followed by a hulking figure in cybernetic armor and an armored woman on segmented, fingered wings. Between the two of them, only the woman's mouth could be seen, stuck in a perpetual frown.
"I see you managed to find a few playmates before the show started, Kross. And my, did you waste no time getting to work. You certainly keep yourself busy~." The cloaked man floated over to the container to see what was inside. "Hmm~, so what do you have planned for this little doll? Nothing that will hurt her cute lil' face, will it~?" The cloaked man seemed to straighten up quickly, before turning around to see his gigantic assistant reel his fist back. The cloaked man didn't lift a finger, but his assistant froze, trembling before he collapsed, writhing in pain. "...Good Adonis~," mocked the cloaked man. "So, does this one have a name? I hope it isn't another boring number," he teased.

Kross listen to Boa quietly until he was finished speaking. It wasn't out of any great respect, or anything of the sort. It was simply more efficient.
"For once, no, to the first question. If my hypothesis is correct, that is. As for the second, as for the second question..." Kross nodded his head towards his desk. What could only be the girl's purse, perhaps, was lain on about the table.
"I suppose you have rubbed off on me a bit during all this time. Learning a touch more about these people is quite insightful, Boa. The endless variables it introduces... well, you can understand my excitement. Besides, this way I won't keep getting repeat numbers."
"Its because your numbering system was terrible sir." A mechanical voice sounded from around the bizarre group, emanating from Kross's computer.
"Quite, Dolce." Kross turned to look at the girl after addressing his computer, noting her features mentally. Late teens, early twenties. Dirty blond hair. Maybe around 5'7. From the picture on her driver's license, he could tell she had green eyes. She had had a decent amount of cash on her as well, but that was wholly inconsequential.
"Hmm. I suppose it is about time to wake her up. Its been a trend recently to mentally prepare my subjects for treatment." As Kross spoke, a small electric shock ran through the floor of the test chamber; the girl within awoke almost violently, yelping in pain.
"Now Boa, how about you greet my newest test subject, Lea Zeal." The girl's eyes widened when she heard her name, and looked around her surroundings, as a horrible feeling of dread began to creep over her.

"Hello, Lea. I am Boa," the cloaked man nodded to the girl in the tube. "THAT is Adonis, he's a little rowdy, and this little lovely is Heather. Say hi to the cute girl, Heather." The cybernetic ave placed a hand on the glass container, her mouth frowning sadly for the girl in the tube. "Heather doesn't talk very much, don't take it personally. Oh, and of course, that there is my esteemed associate, Dr. Daemos. He's taken the liberty of being your new... "care taker." You know Kross, I'm surprised you've left her in her clothes for this long. A cutie like her? I'd have her out of them the instant I had my hands on her~. Oh my, did you hear that, Lea? I meant it as a compliment, truly. I wasn't trying to make you feel uncomfortable~." Though his face couldn't be seen, the painted smile on his mask seemed to portray his amusement as perfectly as his own mouth. Adonis finally stood up, standing silently behind his master. He showed no further signs of treachery. "So, how do you do, Miss Zeal?"

-Lea-
Lea took one good, long look at the people surrounding her, and that was all she needed to be sent backing up against the far side of the cylindrical holding cell. The man who... sort of looked like a scientist wrote something down, and shrugged a little, turning away from the cell.
"W-Who..." No, wait. She could expect some rhetorical and mocking answer from that. Instead, there was a better question she could ask right away.
"What the hell do you want with me!? W-Where is this place!?" The scientist turned back at her, his thick glasses reflecting the light of the surroundings as two glowing circles of light. And somehow... she thought she saw him smile so widely for a moment that his grin reached his ears...
"Wha..." Lea frantically rubbed her eyes, looking at the man again. The grin was gone. What the hell was that. The man didn't even seem to notice, fixing his glasses as he cleared his throat.
-Kross-
"Well, since I'm making a point of full disclosure now..." Kross looked to Boa, "Boa, do you remember that troublesome demon that was blocking the ventilation system? That gelatinous creature that was sneaking into my lab, and that made a blasted fool out of Adonis and Heather? And it took both of us forever to catch the damn thing?"
The incident last week was a rather obnoxious blight on Kross' research, but now he was taking advantage of it. That creature had proven Boa's lackeys woefully inadequate in dealing with such a uniquely flexible opponent. It had been of great annoyance to both of them when it had taken a full twenty minutes for both Boa and Kross to pin the thing down.
As Kross thought about the matter, he drew a syringe of thick red liquid, unlike blood, and more like some sort of sludge. As he did, he injected the liquid into a slot on the back of his mechanical hand, flexing the cybernetic appendage after he did so.
"So clearly, I began to wonder... was it possible to adapt some of these traits to a human without destroying their mind? This concoction should achieve the effect I desire, but again this is all conjecture... that and I ran out of rats."

"Now now," Boa wagged his gauntleted finger, as his arm rose out of his burning black cloak. "It made a damn fool out of Adonis and Zeina, I would never risk getting Heather so dirty, isn't that right, my dear~?" Boa rubbed Heather's cheek with an eerie gentleness. "Even though Heather's barriers would have made things much smoother. Hihihi, haaaah... but now you're going to turn this cute girl into a sentient blob, aren't you? What a tragic fate for such an adorable little body. I suppose it would be asking too much if I could spend a little quality time with her." Boa then turned his attention back to Lea, circling around the tube she was in like a snake wrapping around a meal.
"What do you say, Miss Zeal? I know there is no stopping my friend here. What's going to happen is going to happen, no matter what, but wouldn't you like one last jaunt in your current body?" Boa then slithered back to Kross. "Actually, my friend," he whispered to the doctor. "There IS something I should really do before you turn her into goo. I think it would be to both of our benefit if I placed a shadow marker on her. That way, even if she escapes, we can always find her. Is that acceptable~?"

"Right, Zenia..." Kross murmured to himself, writing down a couple of notes in his tablet, as Boa turned his rather disturbing attention on Lea. The girl's eyes got even wider when she comprehended what he was saying, and what Boa was suggesting. Even on the reasonable chance that the guy might be quite the looker under his get-up...
"... I... n-no way!" Lea's stomach was turning. It had been her last semester. Her whole life had been laid out ahead of her. She was smart, she had good grades, hell, her family life hadn't been bad at all either! And now... this. Imprisoned to this mad scientist's whims and-
"Boa, I would not get her hopes up. All the previous test subjects for this formula died within minutes. Coupled with the fact that this is the first human trial, well. I suppose it is common courtesy to say 'good luck', but I do not personally believe she has any."
"Oh god. You're going to kill me." It was no surprise then that Lea began to shake with fear, curled up in a ball at the back of the container, terrified out of her mind. He was going to inject her with some nasty ass liquid from a demonic slime thing that he just found fucking around in his lab, and it was going to kill her.
"Fear is good." Kross glanced up from his tablet as he wrote, "All variables suggest that the increased heart rate and adrenaline will increase your chances of survival. So by all means, stay terrified." That was no issue for Lea, as Kross continued to write, walking over to some shelves to look for something. Between Kross, Boa, and the cybernetic servants... it wasn't an issue for Lea to stay scared out of her mind.
Kross walked back over, injecting two more syringes into his metal hand. Out of each fingertip, a small needle popped out and retracted, as Kross whispered something to Boa.
"If you feel so inclined, do so. I intend to observe this one in the field if this is a success." The scientist sighed, scratching his head; He had to admit-
"Sir, shall I gas the chamber with a mild pain killer once the experiment begins?"
"Yes Dolce, I would appreciate that. Some final calculations, and..." Lea was about to throw up. Not more than a couple minutes, and it was clearly that she was little more than an experiment to Kross. And Boa... well, it was easier to say that every living thing in the room was turning her stomach right then. Everyone but that girl. That person, or machine, whatever she was. She heard Boa call her Heather. Was she going to do, or end up as something...like that? a section of the 'glass' that the tube was made out of began to lower. It didn't matter. There was no escape through these people. She was just a normal girl, and she wasn't even allowed the option to fight back against monsters like these.

Boa passed through the glass as it lowered, as if to demonstrate that he could have entered the tube with her at any time he wanted. A gauntleted hand emerged from the burning black cloak to drag Lea up to her feet, Boa's firm grip only adding to the conundrum.
"You really are a pal, Kross, truly. I promise I'll bring her back in a timely-"
"Ahem." Boa stopped in his tracks to turn to Kross. He tilted his head toward the scientist as if trying to appeal to him, but he only received the same annoyed glare.
"Bah, you're so impatient. But then who am I to talk?" Boa then forced Lea to the floor of the tube, her face against the tiles as he pinned her arm behind her. Her skin crawled as his hand slid from her thigh up her back.
"You know, I was only trying to help you. Delay the inevitable, give you time to reflect on your life, take you out for a good time. But you rejected my offer." He swiftly pricked her arm on the end of some tab before it disappeared under his cloak. "Rather harshly, if I might add. But, it's your loss, really. I would have been so gentle if you asked me to. Much more gentle than whatever that sludge will do to you, at any rate." Boa planted a finger on the back of Lea's neck, and a series of black circles and sigils appeared around the spot. "Who knows? Maybe if he injects it into your neck, you won't feel a thing, and you'll pass on peacefully~. Still, it's such a shame that we will have to part ways so soon. I just wish we could have spent more time together~. Hihihihi, oh wait~! I can't believe it completely slipped my mind~. You see, I just remembered something; I'm a necromancer."
Boa inched his face closer to Lea's ear as he rubbed her hip. "Even if the experiment fails, I'll piece a body together out of your blood, and bring you back to life~. Then we'll have all the time in the world to get to know each other~." Boa released Lea, and then fazed through the glass again, leaving Lea alone in the tube.
"She's all yours, Doctor. You're welcome~."

The glass stayed down, as Kross entered. Lea was beyond terrified. The close encounter with Boa had quite literally almost scared her to death, as he was sure her heart rate had spiked dangerously during that little... well, the important thing is that Boa didn't contaminate the subject with an unknown variable before the experiment. The shadow markers, thankfully, rarely interfered if at all.
"P-Please... don't... I-" Kross ignored Lea's pleas, dragging her to her feet with his normal hand, as he raised a mechanical finger to her mouth to silence her.
"Stay still. The experiment has begun." With the skill of a practiced doctor, Kross systematically injected her three times; once on each arm, and once on the neck, before swiftly exiting and closing up the test chamber.
"Now then, Lea. You must accurately tell me how you feel at each stage of the experiment, or I shall turn you over to Boa regardless of the outcome. Is this understood?" Lea could only nod numbly. There was evil here, and there was evil here. But if she had a choice...at least the scientist wouldn't try to violate her. If she survived.
"... I-I.... a-alright." She was stammering so much, and she felt...
"My head hurts." It was out of fear she was complying. Kross wrote it down quickly, and waited, silently staring at her. It looked like the man hardly was even breathing.
"I.... my whole body is aching now..." Again, he wrote it down. After all, rats couldn't tell Kross how they felt, he could only observe their physical symptoms.
"I feel really..." A trickle of what looked like blood began to flow out of Lea's nostrils, "... n-nosebleed?"
"Hmm. That happened to subject 2. What were you about to say?"
"C-Congested." Lea was answering purely out of fear for Kross' colleague. She didn't want him to use her. Literally anything she could think of was better than that. It was very sudden then, that she fell to her knees.
"Wh-what!? I can't stand up... and I feel... nauseous." More writing. Kross' face didn't change, as he wrote down every symptom his subject described. That threat had proven invaluable, and gotten him some much appreciated cooperation. He also noticed that the girl's nose was still bleeding, but at an oddly slow pace.

"What kind of nausea?" Boa chimed in. "Do you feel dizzy, or do you feel like you ate something bad? Remember, you must be accurate." Boa was toying with the girl at this point, trying to instill some fear that her accounts may not be adequate enough to save her from him. Adonis shook and heaved with some unfathomable anger, while Heather knelt down to Lea's level, her hands pressed against the tube as if in some futile attempt to reach out and touch her, hold her. The frown Heather wore before had since twisted into a heartbreaking grimace, almost as if she was begging for Lea's forgiveness. It was clear that the ave had long abandoned any hope of opposing Boa.

-Lea-
He had to be sick in the head. This was a sick, twisted joke at this point. Her body was basically failing, and the scientist was basically blackmailing her for information.
"Like I ate something bad, like I'm about to throw up." Again, Kross wrote it down. She struggled to stand up, but her legs felt like jelly.
"Urk, ow, ow... " She hated this, loathed it. She just had to take this, and there was nothing she could do but tell this freak how she felt as she was slowly dying, "Sh-sharp stabbing... pains are going through my body. Still feel like I'm going to... to..." She felt like she'd eaten rotten meat or something. It was disgusting. Revolting.
"It feels like my inside are... churning. Oh... god..." Not only did she feel digustingly bad... she was bleeding from her fingernails... infact, she was pretty sure one of them had come off. She tried to lift one of her hands from the ground, but the... "blood" was thick and gooey for some reason. She could feel that same thick... blood running down, out of her eyes.
"... Mmm. Subject 4 experienced this before dying." He was sick. He didn't care about the fact that she was dying. All he cared about is that this was happening to her, and the how, and the why. Sick. Sick. Sick. Sick. She felt so sick. He was so sick. Boa was so sick. And his companions, they looked like they hated him.
"... gonna hurl." Lea opened her mouth, and wretched on the floor of the cell. It hurt... and something dislodged inside of her, as her body continued to break down. Something was moving up her throat. When she vomited finally, there was nothing but red goo, and...
"... is that my... my... heart?" For at least five seconds, Lea stared at her own heart, before it melted into the pooling red goo under her.
Kross actually raised an eyebrow, before writing this down as well. Lea couldn't even hate the people outside the tank right now. She was too caught up in disbelief. She had just thrown up her...
"Y-You've got to be kidding me... how am I... still..." Her vantage point was lowering now. Her body was breaking down into this stuff. She tried to lift her hand again, and it... just melted off the bone. And even that broke apart, becoming apart of the red sludge slowly filling the bottom of the containment tank.
And yet Kross kept writing, always writing. Lea tried to speak; more of the stuff came out. She couldn't feel anything properly anymore. It didn't even make sense that she was still alive anymore. It was all so sick. So wrong. As Lea's vision began to turn to red, she saw Heather's face. And she wondered "why".
Why does this person care?
Why does it matter?
I'm dying anyways?
Why am I reaching for her?
-Kross-
It was a curious thing that Kross remained silent, as Lea's body began to break apart, large red splotches soaking through her clothing, as she laid her dissolving hand on the glass, right near Heather's. Everything that was left of her was sinking into that slime, leaving nothing solid, as her hand slid down the glass... her eyes turning red, and melting out of her head.
Kross recorded it all. Her symptoms from start to finish, the effects on her body, what went first, so forth and so on. The order of how everything broke apart, insides first, bones last. Etcetera.
What used to be Lea Zeal melted away into a pile of red sludge, unmoving in the bottom of the cell.

Heather's hand followed Lea's as it melted away, and tears could be seen trickling down her pale cheeks from underneath her visor. However, Heather's from began to flip in an odd... smile, before returning to the look of sorrow, and then back and forth between. It seemed she was unable to decide whether to be happy or sad, and Boa approached the tube, cocking his head as he looked at the puddle, waiting for her life to fade.
But it wouldn't.
"I don't believe it..." the cloaked maniac uttered, though his disbelief was short lived. "...Can you hear me, Miss Zeal? Even if you can't, you're a lucky girl. But don't think that this is the last we'll see of each other. You've survived for now, and I'll be watching you more closely. I was teasing you before, but now you have my curiosity." Boa turned from the tube to pass his enormous, fuming servant. "I think it's about time I check up on our other subject of interest, and see how she's faring in the blood of her home." He was about to leave when he noticed Heather would not budge from the tube. He let out a sigh as he floated over toward the cybernetic ave.
"Heather, sweety, there's nothing to worry about. Look, she's fiiiine. She's a puddle, but she's fiiine." Heather briefly looked toward Boa before returning to what was left of Lea. He could only sigh before chuckling lightly. "There's simply no arguing with you. Be on your best behavior for Doctor Daemos, help him out when he asks you to. Come, Adonis." Much like Heather, Adonis refused to move, though for a different reason. His body bulged and quaked with a terrible anger he was unable to unleash. The armor of his right arm peeled away as his rotten flesh split open, a terrible, boney blade sprouting from his arm before the armor closed around it. But that was as far as Adonis could go, and Boa wasted no time in grabbing his monstrous servant, and slamming him clear through an adjacent tube, destroying it as Heather watched in horror.
"You will behave!" Adonis slowly picked himself up, seemingly unharmed, but significantly more docile. "Were your paternal instincts acting up? She isn't even your daughter, get over it," Boa snarled. The cloaked man with the painted smile straightened up, having seemingly calmed himself. "That was most unlike me. Excuse me, Doctor. Perhaps the sooner I leave, the better." With that, Boa's cloak engulfed Adonis, absorbing him into the blackness before Boa reared his head back and plunged face first into his own torso, disappearing in a shrinking spiral of black flames. Heather soon returned her focus to the puddle that was Lea, unwilling to leave her side.

-Lea-
Red, red, red, red, voices, and more red. An impact. More voices. Then a stark silence.
Where was she again? Who was she again? What was she? The jumbled mess of Lea's thoughts swirled and churned beneath the red sludge, before it finally coalesced into a coherent thought, before slowly, vision, touch, motion, and smell stopped being alien concepts to her. Before her memories reformed in her mind, one after the other, and she knew exactly who she was again, where she was... but, that didn't answer the question of what she was.
"Ugh... how am I..." She opened her eyes. Maybe it was forming them. It was something different entirely. She lifted her hand, in front of her face, and froze.
"..."
"... that is remarkable. Even with the experiment a success... you. Are you still Lea Zeal?" There was a silence, as Lea stared at Kross, then back to Heather, and finally to her own warped body. She wasn't even solid anymore. Her hand dripped the red goo it was made of, which pooled beneath.
".... I'll call Boa back if you don't answer, Lea." Immediately, she convulsed, the expression on her new face panicking.
"Y-Yes, I'm still Lea.... I'm still..." Her voice was oddly disconnected, like she wasn't entirely letting the reality of the situation sink in. She felt herself sway side to side, her body losing cohesion as she began to fully grasp the situation.
"Astounding. This means the experiment was 100% successful. I have to admit, I had my doubts when you regurgitated your own heart, but regardless, you are fascinating me right now. Even better, you're still capable of verbal communication. Now, tell me how you're feeling now. Are you in pain?" It was impossible. The evidence was staring her in the face, and yet she was in denial, even still.
"... No. I'm not." Lea clenched her fist.
"Then it really is a success. I'll need to file this formula away. You are extremely fortunate... I was almost certain you'd died. After all, you were the first human trial. And-"
*CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK*
An enormous crack radiated from the point where Lea had slammed her fist. She didn't think about the force it had just taken. There was only one thing important to her right now. Yeah, she was weird right now. And her life was definitely ruined as far as being normal went. But she still had a family to return home to, people who would still understand her! She could get the authorities, get this man put away behind bars! Hell, Malen would probably take her, why not? Her brain was working in a mad overdrive, planning everything
"Let. Me. Out."
"I don't think-" This guy... he didn't get to object. A second strike resonated, sending cracks resonating throughout the glass. Kross took a step back, and turned to Heather.
"..." The last strike against the durable glass broke out the front of the tube, finally releasing Lea from her confinement. And yet Kross was clapping? He didn't even look pleased. He looked... bored.
"Well done, Lea. While I'm impressed you've done so much in such a short time, how do you intend on escaping this place?" Lea was about to slug him. She really, REALLY wanted to just murder this bastard in cold blood. But he had a point.
"My lab can only be reached by a teleporter only I can work. You're free to tour the place if you feel so inclined, but you may not touch any sensitive materials." What? No, that was impossible. Every... evil lair, it had to have a real exit, right!? Lea looked around frantically, and what she kept coming back to was Kross. He wasn't worried. He certainly wasn't scared of her, even with this body.
"You don't know what I... can..." Oh. Wait.
"So, I am assuming, after all of a minute, you know the ins and outs of that body?" Lea's arms slumped down, melting into the base of her body, the puddle that was surrounding her. For a split second, she thought she saw something horrifying. For a moment... the space around Kross turned white, and a sickening black aura poured off of him. His face was replaced by two glowing circles, and a sickening, smiling face. It was odd to be so afraid, and yet have no heartbeat. But here Lea was. And as soon as it had come, the scene was gone, and Kross was normal again... as normal as that man got, that was.
"Now, if you're quite done... I need to prepare for the next stage of the experiment... Heather, just keep her company while I prepare." It was absurd. Lea sunk down next to the cybernetic ave, staring at the metal floor as Kross left the room down a side hall. This place... it was like a tomb. No entrance or exit. No escape at all. There was no way. Hell, they were probably underground to boot.
Wait.
Wait, wait wait wait.
She had been breathing before. They had been breathing. That means there had to be air. There had to be...
"... a ventilation shaft." Lea turned to Heather, "H-hey... your name is Heather, right? Do you know where the vents are in this place?" It was risky. So risky. But she was the only person left in here that had any sympathy for her. Any shred of compassion.
It was her only chance to get out.

Heather placed her hand over Lea's own gooey hand. She smiled awkwardly for Lea as she was so happy that Lea retained her humanity. She looked around nervously, before he placed her hand on what could only be thought of as Lea's cheek. She practically pulled the girl up to her gooey feet, as if the small gesture in itself was enough to empower.
"F-fffollow me. Know-the way." The cybernetic ave began to float out of the room, motioning for Lea to follow her. Every once in a while, Heather would stop to scan the hallway and adjacent rooms, to make sure other experiments were not out and about. Lea was still too unfamiliar with her new body. If a straggler got in their way, Heather was determined to protect her.

-Lea-
She couldn't help but manage a tiny smile. That monster that had been here just a moment ago may own her soul... but this person was, at least, still a decent person. Lea managed to stand up completely, somehow forming legs... her feet still pooled at the bottom, and it was a tough thing to concentrate, but... well, at least she could pull her clothes out of her body and situate them right. Before she forgot, she grabbed the rest of her stuff off of Kross' desk quickly. An ID would... sorta be invaluable.
"... gods. I look like a freak." She kinda guessed she had before, but on passing the reflective surface of a series of cells... well, it was jarring to say the least. Her clothes were all different shades of red from being soaked with her body, and her body was... well, lots of red. Her eyes took the cake for creepy though, as they were gold, surrounded by black. Though, all things considered, she counted herself lucky to be alive AND not in Boa's hands. After several turns, though, they finally reached what looked like...
"Hey an air duct, now I can just- YEOUCH!" It was electrified!? Well, it surprised the hell out of her, but that HURT. Like half-melted for a moment out of shock hurt. The fact that she had come up with that so quickly kinda scared her, actually.
"H-hey... Heather. You think you could take care of that grate somehow?" If she could? Home free. She could find her way home; hell, to the surface in general would be nice.... Heather seemed to be a cyborg of some kinda, so she was sure...
