Yuro walked down the sloped sidewalk with his hands in his pockets. He'd been walking for about half an hour, he figured. It wasn't like him to take strolls like this on his own. Usually, he was comfortable simply sitting in front of his laptop, checking for new posts on his favorite message boards, or playing some obscure indie game that he and about five other people in the world knew about. But today, he wanted to go on a walk.
It was just something he felt he had to do. He couldn't explain it any better than that.
As Yuro continued to wander aimlessly, an advertisment on a nearby telephone pole caught his attention.
"Professional counseling for the grief-stricken. Available at a reasonable price of-"
He didn't read beyond that point. It sickened him that people were somehow making a profit over the recent bombing of what is now considered "old GD."....And yet, he had to admit, there were a lot of people who probably needed the kind of therapy that this sheet of paper was advertising. He wanted to disapprove of it, but he couldn't. To do so would be selfish.
Yuro imagined himself walking up to a psychiatrist and yelling something like "how dare you offer these people comfort and understanding in their time of need!? Shame on you!" He actually managed to force a begrudging chuckle out of himself.
Just as he was about to move on, he felt a series of small, cold pellets pattering against his head. He looked up and realized it was raining.
"Swell," he said to no one in particular. He was startled when he heard someone actually respond to him.
"Really? I find the rain to be rather gloomy myself."
Yuro looked to the source of the voice. He recognized the woman. An ave that was only slightly shorter than him. She had colorful wings, bright blonde hair, and was wearing a white velvet dress. She also happened to be carrying an umbrella.
"Elen? You're, uh...you're still in the city?"
"Yes," the avian girl responded with a warm chuckle. "I had no intention to leave. If I did, I wouldn't have asked if I could visit you sometime."
That's right. She did ask that. Though, that brought up the question of why she hadn't visited him yet. A reasonable amount of time had passed since their last meeting...
"I must apologize for not stopping by your abode, Yuro. I've been distracting myself a little too well with Grand Divide's fascinating cultural delights."
Question answered.
"I never expected to find so much art in this city," the ave continued. "Malen has its fair share of watercolor painters and sketch artists, but Grand Divide is so abundant with aesthetic beauty! It's like nothing I've ever seen before! Don't you th-"
Elen interrupted herself mid-sentence and simply...stared at Yuro for a moment. She looked puzzled, as was Yuro.
"Is there something on my face?" asked Yuro.
"N-no, I simply realized that you don't have an umbrella."
Elen walked over to Yuro and stood next to him, her umbrella now shielding him from the cold rain.
"You're more than welcome to share mine," Elen said, smiling warmly. Yuro blushed in response and gave her an awkward half-nod nod that made him feel self-conscious.
As the two of them began walking forward in unison, Yuro attempted to break the uncomfortable silence.
"So, you were talking about art before..."
"Oh, yes! Back to what I was saying about that. Don't you think it's wonderful to live in a place so full of creativity?"
Yuro shrugged. "I guess so. I haven't made many trips to other cities, so I can't really compare them based on first-hand experience. I don't really pay much attention to all the "art" in GD anyway. I guess you just sort of get used to it after a while, you know?"
"Hah!" Elen let out a hearty laugh. "I'm certain you would miss it if you were to spend a week away from it."
"You're one to talk, Elen," said Yuro snidely. "Isn't Edge City all towering spires and pretty saucers? How's that not 'aesthetically appealing?'"
"Oh, Yuro, you aren't seriously comparing my birth home to Grand Divide are you? Trust me, if you ever were to see Edge City with your own eyes, you would know that it's hardly anything compared to this."
"I'll believe it when I see it."
After Yuro spoke that last comment, Elen rolled her eyes, and the two spent a few minutes walking in silence. It was actually pretty fun. Not nearly as awkward as Yuro thought it would be. He didn't even need to talk to her in order to enjoy it. The whole experience reminded him of the few silent moments that he and Aire used to share while walking to school. It was like that, only a bit more...warm. He felt more secure than he did with Aire. Maybe it was due to the fact that he was standing next to a beautiful, refined woman rather than a spunky, scarf-wearing geek.
All in all, he liked it. Perhaps more than he should have. But there was still one thing about it that he couldn't quite understand.
"Where the hell are we going?" asked Yuro.
"You'd be best suited to answer that. I was simply following your lead."
"I was following yours."
"Oh..."
There was another pause in the conversation, though it was only a short one this time. It didn't take Yuro long to realize what he needed to say next.
"Following my lead's pointless. I was pretty much just wandering aimlessly to begin with."
"Ah....So was I."
Wait...
"So, let me get this straight. Neither of us know where we're going, and we've both been following each other with the hopes that the other person has some sort of destination in mind."
"It...does seem that way, yes."
"I think that's our cue to pick a destination to head to. I think I can retrace my steps back to Solala's place. How about we head there?"
Elen smiled brightly and nodded. "Let's," she said.
Yuro began to trek back to Solala's place, Elen in suit. He still wasn't sure what it was that drove him to wander around aimlessly, but he didn't really care at the moment. He was simply glad that he didn't have to do it alone.
