(WIP, only Interstellar Regions listed so far)
Countless worlds, each with their own unique spins on culture, life, climate and day cycles, make up the Tempera galaxy. It's a big place. That's why it's best to know what's where. Expect to get lost unless you have the EXACT coordinates to where you plan to go.
For your convenience, here is a list of some of the many cultures, nations, and factions that span the galaxy.
INTERSTELLAR REGIONS
The Galactic Democracy of Seraph
"Let the loathed be loved," said the first president of the GDS. The first outstanding example of democracy has made an immense impact on the rest of the world. Originally a group of settlers sent to explore the once inaccessible Seraph systems, beyond the immensely large and dense Seraphine Asteroid Barrier, the Seraph systems eventually formed a unique society based on the ideals invented by long dead Dolish subcultures. It was the first multi-racial galactic civilization, and since then, has been far from the last. The GDS is much less strict on immigration than any other major civilization in Tempera, which makes it a very popular country amongst refugees, unfairly persecuted individuals, and unfortunately, criminals of every type.
Most of the inhabitable planets owned by the GDS have hotter than average climates. Many of these planets, for example, are globally tropical. Many of the planets attract rich tourists with taste for scenery and nature, though these tourists are quickly disappearing with the increase in poverty and the expanding presence of planet-wide cities.
More space stations and colonies can be found in the GDS than most other places in space. Most of these are left over from the settlers who originally came to the Seraph systems seeking new lives. The residents of these floating stations are accustomed to their lives aboard what are essentially giant immobile space ships, and don't necessarily lack anything that planetborn folks do, aside from the ability to interface with nature.
Humans take up the majority of the GDSs population, but the racial diversity of the interstellar nation still outmatches any other. Many races that have recently expanded their presence actually originated from the Seraph systems, such as the Lokhan. The large, muscular, beetle-like organisms were taught about modern technology and civilization by settlers, and since then, they have spread out far and wide across the cosmos. However, in doing so, they have very nearly put to rest their old traditions and culture. They have blended in with the other races of Tempera, and very few still hold true to their old tribal ways. The same thing can be said for the many other races that the GDS brought into the new age of technology.
The Galactic Depression has hit the GDS hard. Perhaps harder than most. People come to the Galactic Democracy nowadays, expecting freedom, and a new, better life. However, one out of every four immigrants ends up homeless, in povertous debt to another person or organization, and constantly hungry, thirsty and sick. Their dreams and hopes are shattered upon entry.
During the Cosmic War, several nations were annexed into the GDS.
The GDS is part of the League of Interstellar Governments, along with the United Empire of Rorduk.
The United Empire of Rorduk (pronounced "roar duck")
The interstellar empire older than and just as powerful as the GDS. Their strict laws have made them a symbol of well-kept order, prosperity, and to some, tyranny. While it is hard to argue that the Empire's laws are unreasonable, there are some people who believe them to be unnecessary. For example, every planet under Rorduk's dominion has a set curfew, and only people with special permission are allowed to stay up any later than it. However, the residents of these planets are free to present complaints about the curfew, and the curfew can be changed if too many people are bothered by it.
Crime is not nearly as common in Rorduk as it is in Seraph. Most crimes are dealt with quickly and efficiently. There is no need for a jury in court, and all judges are evaluated daily for bias and signs of corruption. No one gets away with breaking the law in Rorduk. No one.
Most people born within the empire are content to remain where they are. The economic breakdown effects the Empire just as much as the Galactic Democracy. They handle the depression differently, but neither nation is better off than the other. There is no reason for the poverty-stricken people of Rorduk to move away. They would end up just as poor, somewhere else.
While considered an empire, Rorduk is very different from the stereotypical concept of an empire in several ways. The main difference is that Rorduk is a "united" empire. Race or ethnic background are not taken into account when someone is given a position of political power. While the empire has dominion over several smaller societies, nothing is preventing the people of those societies from obtaining military or political power as long as it is in the name of the empire.
The leadership structure of the Empire is rather complicated. An emperor, upon dying, is usually replaced by one of his children. However, a group of judges watch the emperor at all times, evaluating if he is worthy of his position or not. If the majority of the populace as well as the aformentioned judges deems him mad, unnecessarily cruel, or just outright incompetent, the emperor is forcibly removed from his throne and replaced with someone else. If necessary, it is possible for someone outside of the imperial family to become emperor, but only if there are no suitable candidates within the family at the time. This has only happened once in the history of the United Empire. The emperor need not necessarily be human either, though there have been no non-human emperors as of yet.
The use of magic is highly regulated in the empire. Only highly ranked law enforcement agents, nobles, black ops operatives, and various higher ups are permitted to use magic within Rorduk's borders, and even then, it can only be used for specific purposes. These include self defense, apprehending criminals or terrorists, getting the truth out of interrogation subjects, etc etc. Point is, magic is taken very seriously, and used for very serious purposes. No one is allowed to use magic for everyday purposes or activities, such as filling your bathtub with water.
Much like the GDS, several nations were annexed into the empire during the Cosmic War.
The United Empire of Rorduk is part of the League of Interstellar Governments, along with the Galactic Democracy of Seraph.
The Lawless Frontier
The Lawless Frontier is a chaotic sector of space that spans almost a third of the entire galaxy. It is overrun with bandits, warlords, and colonists who desire distance from the big governments. This sector is constantly at conflict with itself. Pirates pillage from colonists, and colonists do what they can do ward them off. Mercenary groups battle with each other over control of territory, and kingpins plan their next moves for the Frontier and beyond.
How did such large sector of space become such a bastion of discord? Some would say it can all be blamed on the skalotions.
In the early years of recorded history, skalotions were the first known species to achieve the miracle of Faster Than Light-speed travel. Rather than take the opportunity to simply explore the galaxy, they set out to conquer it. However, skalotions have never been known to work in large groups. No grand skalotion government has ever existed. As the skalotions grabbed more territory for themselves, they came into conflict with each other, dragging the other intelligent species inhabiting the sector with them. Other races, both FTL capable and not, had to fight to survive, even if all they had were sticks and stones. The end result was the creation of a chaotic sector of space where anything was permissible, and nothing was sacred.
The UER and the GDS call this section of space the Lawless Frontier due to their supposed efforts to expand their presence into the region. The UER leads crusades against the various bandits and warlords in the Lawless Frontier, and annexes the more "peaceful" areas and their populations into itself. Meanwhile, the GDS somewhat less successfully gains control over more territory through negotiation and colonization.
The Lawless Frontier, while not directly effected by the factors that likely caused the Grand Collapse, still have fallen upon particularly harsh times. The factions within the Frontier that are willing to negotiate with the GDS are giving, but no longer receiving. The GDS can no longer afford to pay what it owes to those it's made an effort to barter with. As a result, a surprising amount of factions have gone bankrupt; they put a risky amount of money investing in a deal that would repay them with twice as much as they had before, only to receive nothing. This, combined with the UER's relentless conquest, have reduced the fattest of cats to poor little dumpster divers.
For the rugged and the destructive, the Lawless Frontier is the best place to be. But for those who desire a more controlled, civilized environment, it is the very face of vileness and corruption. Living a successful life in the Frontier requires one to embrace the chaos for what it is, and enjoy the freedom it offers.
