Dominion: Galactic Democracy of Seraph
Name of Planet: Hybron VI
Name of Specific Location: Mobius City
Estimated population: 1.2 billion
Standard Hours per Day: 17 hours of a daylight, 17 hours of nighttime, measured as AM and PM respectively. 34 hours per full cycle.
Above picture is a visual representation of a particularly twisted mobius strip.
Description: The ever floating and active Mobius City is considered by many to be the most outstanding symbol of Seraphine culture, power, and value. The GDS' most beloved city is also its most popular. Before the Grand Collapse hit, tourists flocked to the floating city for its incredible sights and constant activity. Even more people sought permanent residence there, hoping to live with the security, comfort, and freedom that the Seraphine dream promised immigrants from any corner of the galaxy. However, nearly no place has gone untouched by the depression, and Mobius is no exception.
The city is practically a miracle of engineering. Imagine, if you will, a really long mobius strip. Now imagine that that mobius strip is so long, that it stretches around the entire planet. Imagine that it hovers around the planet like a giant orbital ring. Now imagine that there are buildings, people, and an entire civilization built on that mobius strip. That would be the best way to describe Mobius City. A giant mechanical, floating Mobius strip high in the sky, that houses well over a billion people.
"How does it float?" you must be asking. The truth is that no one really knows. Mobius strip itself was presumably built by ancient Dolish machinists, before the days of recorded galactic history. What is known is that colonists who moved to the Seraph systems found the giant spiralling ring hovering above the surface of the aquatic planet of Hybron VI, and built structures on it, eventually transforming it into the metropolis it is today.
The "Strip Base" (the presumably Dolish-built mobius-strip shaped surface that the colonists built their society on) emits its own gravitational field, preventing structures built upon it from being pulled in by Hybron VIs gravity. Structures built upon the base jut out upward from it. Take a moment to imagine yourself standing in the middle of the city, and trying to stare at the length of the giant mobius strip. All the tall structures would likely obstruct your vision, wouldn't it? Indeed, if one were to try to stare straight ahead along the path of the strip, it would be an endless spiraling sea of metal and motion. Depending on where one is standing in the city, looking up would either reveal a deep violet sky, or an even deeper violet ocean. In the words of Skalotion explorer Kakt Maying "Mobius City is the only place in the universe where you have to look up in order to see the water.
Many visitors to Mobius City find the experience to be disorienting, and with good reason. Walking along the streets of MC is like walking in an endless spiral, which is a dizzying experience at the least. However, its beauty outshines its confusing structure, and the city still ranks number 3 in It Magazine's "Top 5 Most Beautiful Places in the Universe."
Despite the effects of the Collapse, Mobius City still possesses an efficient travel system. Sonic Railways allow trams to travel across the city faster than the speed of sound. Traffic is properly regulated, and hovercar accidents remain low compared to the rates in other major cities under the dominion of the GDS. Getting around the city is easy, provided you have the money necessary to afford a vehicle or a ride on the tram.
Corporate business is a big thing in Mobius City. Over 12% of the buildings constructed on the Strip Base are headquarters for major organizations and companies, including the esteemed robotics manufacturer Gordon Inc., the popular insurance agency Balif Insurance, and package delivery company UniDel.
As mentioned before, the city is in a constant state of activity. During the day, several businesses, from delis to hardware stores are open for browsing. At night, services like nightclubs and bars are always awaiting customers, guaranteeing those who are well off always have something to do, 34 hours, 7 days a week.
Unfortunately, despite its beauty and appeal, Mobius City is at the worst it has ever been. The Collapse has hit the various businesses in the city hard. More and more workers are losing their jobs, and are forced to live on the lowest levels of the city, closest to the base, searching for vermin to kill and fill their bellies. Many of the city's most magnificent buildings are now empty, the businesses that own them having gone bankrupt. An entire third of the city's population is comprised of jobless folk. The latter two thirds are lucky, as they still have the means to live normal, stable lives. Fate, however, can be a cruel thing. Those with jobs could very easily lose them at any moment. Everyone is on edge, and scrambling to survive in one way or the another. As time passes, the residents of Mobius City are growing more and more desperate. It may only be a matter of time until the city is crushed under the weight of its continually increasing rate of poverty.
