The Tunpera galaxy is abundant with artifice. Space travel is quite common, and while faster-than-light-speed (FTL) travel can often be quite expensive, it is far from impossible. Cultured civilians live their lives, unmoved by the wires sticking out the back of his fellow man's head. Having one's eyes replaced with mechanical ones is as common as a boy getting braces.
If there is one thing the universe has plenty of, it's technology.
Below is are descriptions of some of the various tech that the Ark Ethos universe makes use of. Keep in mind that much of this technology is common, and not thought to be strange at all by the common city-dweller.
Technological Enhancements:
Also known as TEs, Tech Upgrades or Ups (by those who enjoy using slang), Technological Enhancements are artificial augmentations performed on a living being's body that improve one's abilities, traits, or state of living. Cybernetic eyes, mechanical arms, nanotech regeneration systems, and neural implants all fall under this category.
TEs are quite common amongst most societies in Tunpera. Two out of every three people obtain at least one TE at some point in their life. One out of every three obtain enhancements which are fully visible to the public eye (for example, a mechanical jaw that actually looks like a mechanical jaw). Even the poorest of the poor can manage to scrape out minor enhancements from recycle bins. A schizophrenic bum might still be able to make use of a glitched up nerve-stimulating cybernetic visor.
The types of enhancements one receives often depends on the occupation he or she persues. Politicians and negotiators often have neural implants installed in their brain that improve their ability to reason and debate. Soldiers usually have pieces of armor fused to their bodies, to ensure their vitals are always protected. Police officers sometimes have their legs replaced with mechanical ones, which allow them to more easily pursue criminals on the run.
Those who openly refuse to ever have TEs are often looked upon with suspicion. Cybernetics have become so commonplace in society that those who refuse to consider the idea of using them, even when a TE could save someone's life, are considered the equivalent of hippies. The only outstanding groups in the galaxy to remain completely pure are civilizations that are far behind others in terms of technological advancement, or hardcore biological purist groups.
Of course, one can not simply have as many TEs as he or she desires. Doing so would be similar to having plastic surgery performed on he or she every other week. It is not healthy, and nearly always ends in psychosis or death. The only known exceptions to this rule are the UER's E.A.T.U supersoldiers, which are designed to push the limits of technological enhancement. Surviving being turned into an E.A.T.U requires one's mind and spine to be built around an entirely newly made body. They are essentially 99% enhancement, 1% natural, and have the temperament to show it. Undergoing such a process requires one to forfeit the pleasures that come with a natural biological body, such as a human's ability to experience the full palette of human emotions. Even if one were to achieve such a level of technological enhancements, by becoming an E.A.T.U or through other undiscovered means, would it be worth it? It all comes down to if one would prefer to be a living being, or a machine.
Weapons:
Never before in recorded has sentient life had more ways to kill one another at its fingertips. From a simple crowbar to a incinerating bomb capable of wiping out the population of an entire planet within a week, there is no shortage of weapons. Knives, firearms, and most typical weaponry can be found all over the galaxy in abundance Below are a list of some of the different instruments of death that are unique to modern Tunpera.
Drill Ballistics: Bullets are still used, and used quite effectively for lethal purposes in Tunpera. However, some bullets are designed to keep digging through a target even after the bullet has reached the target and been lodged within the body.
Drill bullets, when successfully transferred to the targeted enemy, actually drill and dig around the target's innards, wrecking as many vital organs and severing as many veins as they can before running out of battery. To a person who doesn't have a] top of the line artificial anti-infection system active inside his body, a single drill bullet can prove to be fatal. Without anything to stop it, the drill bullet will continue to dig and destroy until the person's body is completely torn and irreparable. However, this shouldn't be quite as much of a problem if measures are taken to ensure such a parasitic thing can't stay in the body for long.
Phasmatic Weaponry: Named for their non-solid, almost ghost-like qualities, phasmatic weapons, or "ghost arms" are weapons that melee weapons that use some form of energy to slay the opponent. Phasmatic weapons usually must be activated via a switch or some other trigger. Once activated, the energy forms into some sort of shape. The shape, and the energy it is formed from, can vary. The most common example of the phasmatic weapon would be the plasmaphasmatic blade, or the "plasma blade" for short. smaller plasmaphasmatic blades are used often as tools to melt and slice through less durable metals, while larger ones are used more often to kill. Another example of a phasmatic weapon would be the pyrophasmatic blade, which while activated, forms a shaped blade of incredibly hot flame, which is capable of causing more incendiary damage than a plasmaphasmatic blade by catching objects on fire as it slices through them. Cryophasmatic hammers, and electrophasmatic spears are a few more examples.
Phasmatic weapons keep their shape via the use of a special material called capsulum. Capsulum is a highly magnetic solid compound that draws in energy or matter, but can be altered to also repel them. Different kinds of capsulum naturally draw in different types of energy and substances. The attracting and repelling traits can be manipulated to make energy form certain shapes. How? Few know, since the information has, for one reason or another, not been revealed to the public, despite phasmatic weaponry itself being available.
Phasmatic weapons are generally good at transferring energy to a target, harming it in the process. Because of this, phasmatic weapons can often be more lethal than conditional melee arms. This is not always necessarily the case, however, since there is one flaw that almost all phasmatic weapons generally share. Phasmatic weapons do not have the weight that traditional melee weapons do, and as a result, hits from phasmatic weapons have less force behind them. Some energy-resistent materials may be simultaneously incredibly vulnerable to the weighty swing of a large axe.
