Winter slept soundly on the pull-out couch in his living room, with Peppermint nuzzled comfortably next to him. He had long grown used to the touch of her metal arms. Nebula was given the guest room, but the master bedroom was empty. Winter slowly woke, and though he was initially startled when he realized he couldn't see Amura in his immediate vicinity, he soon found her again, well on her way to Malen. He sighed, and smiled. He knew there was no point in chasing Amura. She was taking her life into her own hands. Winter squeezed Peppermint slightly, and held her even closer to him.
"Winter...~." Peppermint stirred as her systems began to start up completely. Winter simply continued to hold her close as she "awoke". She looked so precious, but Winter knew it was best to tell her what happened now, in stead of waiting.
"...B-but, why would she do that?" Peppermint asked.
"It's hard to say," Winter replied. "But Amura wants to be on her own. For the first time in a long time, she's searching for something, even though she isn't entirely sure what that something is."
"I don't get it..." Peppermint pouted.
"Just give her time," Winter said, patting Peppermint's head. "In the meantime, why don't you go and see how Nebula is doing?"
"Oh! I wonder if Nebu is awake yet. Maybe I can play with her!" Peppermint quickly scampered off of the pull-out couch and towards the guestroom. The door to Nebula's room opened slowly and quietly, and after a few moments, a pair of red eyes and pigtails slowly poked their way over the foot of Nebula's bed.
"Neeeeebuuuuu~..."
Winter dressed himself proper, and straightened himself up. He shaved his face, brushed his stringy bangs, and applied his mosh cap. He then walked out into the living room and opened the front door to look at his ruined neighborhood. There was a newspaper on his step, which he found somewhat odd, yet comforting.
"Well, at least that in itself is a good sign."

It was always an odd thing for Nebula, coming out of sleep mode. It was a sort of experimental power saving state in which she experienced what Jessica said was close to a normal human's kind of sleep. Completely optional, yes, but relaxing.
But oddly enough, there was the little android at the foot of her bed. Nebula blinked, and refocused her eyes.
"H-Hi... Peppermint...?" There was an ever so slight worry about what the little android would do; after all, she was as rambunctious as a human child.

"Hi Nebu~." Peppermint's red eyes had an odd gleam to them as she sunk down and out of Nebula's sight. The gleam of a hunter. The little android was exceptionally quiet, until-
"BWAAAAAAH!!!" Peppermint sprung up from the side of Nebula's bed, pouncing on the confused android. "Nebu Nebu, how do you feel?"
Winter sat in his recliner, reading the paper when he heard an outburst in the bedroom. The newspaper continued to worry him as he read it. "Shelters Rise for Victims." "Necromancers Offering Family Counseling." The more he read, the more he realized how easily the necromancers had planted their feet in Grand Divide.

Well, that was certainly an... interesting way to be greeted after exiting sleep mode; but, as for how she felt...
"Uh, hold on. Testing..." Holograms and read outs flew past Nebula's eyes, as she flexed her hand, opening and closing her thrusters, "All systems are green. I guess my nanites finished repairing me overnight. So, uh, I guess I'm feeling fine." Nebula sat there, confused, with an extremely enthusiastic Peppermint on top of her.
"So... how about you then, little Peppy?" A small portion of her wondered where she had come up with that nickname, but it was only fair to give her one in return, really.

Peppermint stopped when Nebula asked her how she felt. Peppermint, slowly, gently rolled to the side and off of Nebula. She lied next to the prototype with a melancholy look on her face.
"Amu Amu left. Winter said that she is looking for something she doesn't know. ...I thought we were going to stay together, but... Amu left too. Now all my friends have gone away..." Peppermint's eyes seemed to spring open wider, realizing something.
"N-Nebu?" Peppermint turned toward her, looking to her with an expression of sadness and looming fear. "We're friends now, right? ...Will you leave me, too?"

That was... well, it was a difficult question for her to answer at the moment. Nebula had no idea how things would turn out when Jessica eventually found her... especially when she confronted her about everything that had been kept from her.
Did she think that keeping this information from her would... make her happy? No, it didn't. It kind of hurt.
"I dunno, Peppermint. Right now, I don't even want Devoid to find me. I don't want to see Jessica. I... don't like the fact that I've been lied to and kept out of the loop since I was created." And suddenly, an idea. An idea, that she hadn't considered before.
"... say, Pepper, you remember when you mentioned something about hacking me, and I said it was confidential or something? If you can find the directory for the network, we can sever the connection permanently, so Devoid CAN'T find me." That was her idea, anyways. There was something like a pang of guilt when she thought of Jessie again, but she forced it aside. It was... odd. Her mind was screaming at her, telling her Devoid was dangerous, that everything she'd thought up until the Ileris' attack was a lie. Truthfully... she was too scared to confront Jessica about it. At the very least, she wanted to be off the network when she saw her again, so she would at least know that her thoughts were her own.

"Hack you?" Peppermint looked at Nebula, somewhat shocked that Nebula would the offer. "...Okay. I can hack you." Peppermint pushed a button on the back of her neck, and pulled the head of a cable out of it, removing the cap and storing it in her arm. She moved in behind Nebula and looked over her neck before finding a button, and after depressing it, ejected the plastic protector of her neck port. "...I'm going to start now, okay Nebu? Here. I. Go." Peppermint plugged herself into Nebula, and began to hack into her.

As Peppermint began to hack into Nebula, several files, interfaces, and images began to open before her eyes. A layout of Nebula's body, along with a readout of her system appeared in the center of all of this information. Peppermint scanned the files for passwords and barriers. For such an advanced prototype, Nebula had rather standard security. Perhaps they hadn't counted on Nebula falling into the hands of someone else familiar with Devoid technology. However, a few things would stand out. One, a file with an enormous amount of ecryption, the kind that seemed to constantly shift and change. Though it was unknown to Peppermint, this was probably the thing that limited her powers without a presidential order. However, two other things would stand out as well. The Devoid Cerebral Network directory was locked, but it was only a standard lock. And even more curiously, there was a directory that only read "Nebsubaltset". It wouldn't have caught Peppermint's eye so much, except that the secrity lock was timed to unlock in several months. Given how curious Peppermint was normally, it would be a hard thing to resist cracking into.
"Um... you seeing anything yet, Pepper?" Nebula felt odd while being hacked; everything felt weird, but oddly it was calming. She couldn't put her finger on why it was exactly, but she figured it had to do with Peppermint herself.
"Yeah, there's this file with a timer on it. "Nebsubaltset". It'll unlock in five months and 27 days. Do you want me to leave it alone, or do you want me to open it up?" Now that was unusual. Nebula had no idea what that was, and her guesses didn't help. Neb was her, sub was a shortened version of subdimensional space normally, but altset had her stumped. What on earth did that mean?
"Uu, uu, maybe it'll unlock access to a new set of armory! That could be so cool!" Nebula could only roll her eyes at that one; it wasn't like she particularly needed one.
"Um, go ahead and unlock it, I guess. I'll figure it out once I have access to it. What about the network?"
"Oh yeah, the lock on the Network is a standard one. There's something else that's heavily encrypted. I think I'll need Winter's help with that one. What do you want me to open first?
"The network one. Disable it if you can, but I don't think it can be remotely turned off. If you can't, see if you can find the wire path or something."
"Okey dokey!" Peppermint quickly unlocked the file on the Network, and what she found was... the Network file was impossible to just turn off. Nebula would have to delete it entirely to get rid of it. Peppermint pouted for a moment, trying a few times to close it through a work-around, but nothing worked. It was like it wasn't meant to be turned off. Well, there was only one thing to do then.
"Um, I can't turn it off. ...Do you want me to delete it?"
"Yep. Get rid of that thing before whatever is causing the interference over Grand Divide dissipates. I don't think either of us would like a bunch of DKS shock troops coming to retrieve me...."
"Alright. Here goes nothing." Peppermint deleted it without hesitation, although... "Should I remove it from your Recycle bin?"
".... Yeah."
"Alright, it's gone for good. The Network will never ever reach you again." Nebula let a small smile creep onto her face. Never having to worry about Devoid's network influencing her thinking again filled her with relief. "Sooooo, what next?"
"Alright, next, that time locked file." Nebula had to admit, she had some sneaking suspicions about that one. A time locked file. What was five months and twenty-seven days from now? It almost felt like she should know the answer, but she didn't.
"Alrighty! I bet it's something super-boom-awesome!" Peppermint wasted no time in cracking the file open, and when she looked inside, the data inside the folder was the signature code for something stored in subdimensional space, but there was literally no telling what it could be. No visual representation, nothing. Except, however, there was a small audio file, that played automatically when Peppermint cracked it. The voice of a woman who was unfamiliar to the smaller android, and very familiar to Nebula spoke out a single line.
"Happy birthday, Nebula."
Nebula froze on the spot, completely an utterly confused and conflicted on how she should feel.
"...Is that your creator?" Nebula didn't respond immediately.
"... Y-Yeah, that is."
"...I ruined something special, didn't I? I'm sorry, Nebu."
"I-I... n-no, its not your fault, Pepper. Really." No, it was Nebula who felt bad about making her do it, "... Wow this kinda makes me feel like a massive jerk."
"Why?" Well, it didn't surprise her that Pepper didn't know why she felt like such a jerk.
"I think... Jessie would have wanted to be there when this unlocked." Nebula shook her head; no, maybe... this was something that could be useful. Probably. She doubted it would be a weapon, since that wasn't like Jessie... no, it would probably be something that could keep her safe, somehow. Suddenly, Nebula felt a pair of arms wrap around her from behind; Peppermint's arms. "Nebu, I know you're sad your creator isn't here, so... I just want to let you know that I am. I'm happy that you were made, and I'm happy that we're friends." Nebula sat there and thought for a moment, trying to work that out in her head. The only person who she had called a friend before was Jessica. But now, this android, who was as sweet as a person could be, was considering her a friend too?
"Thanks, Peppermint. That means... a whole lot to me right now, kay?"
"...Hey Nebu, do you want to open up your birthday present?"
"... Well, its something that she stored in sudimensional space, so I'd better unplug this first...." Nebula pulled the cord from the back of her neck, before jumping up and off the bed, "Jessie always taught me that when transferring something like equipment from subspace, you should always be standing up.... kinda wondering what it is, actually. What do you think Pepper?"
"Who cares what it is? What matters is it's a present from your mommy, so it must be mega-heavy-special!" Honestly, Nebula couldn't argue with that. Peppermint had a point.
"... Yeah, if it's a present from her, I'm sure its special." Nebula spoke with a smile on her face, as she activated the data. As soon as she did, a jumbled array of holographic readouts surrounded her body, as a pale glow surrounded her body.
"Wh-what the...?" A voice sounded in Nebula's head, as the readouts of her body began mapping various points on her body out.
"INSTALLING SEQUENCE... done. MAPPING.... done. OPENING SUBDIMENSIONAL RIFT"
"O-okay, so where is..." Nebula wasn't given time to finish her sentence.
"COMMENCE FRAME SWAP"
Also like a hologram, but far more solid, Nebula's outer frame began to dissolve away, as though it were made of data, dissipating into square particles, as a new one rapidly covered her body. The new one glowed a bright white as it was transferred on, and once the process had completed, the light began to die down. Nebula opened her eyes, looking over herself... her body was covered in fake skin.... wait no. It was more complex than that. All of her systems seemed intact, but her new skin was rooted to her artificial brain, and her nervous system, and it followed her movement naturally when she moved. It was a different feeling for her, certainly.
"I can... feel things? What...? That is what this sensation is, isn't it?" The now very human-looking Nebula looked at Peppermint, rather confused, and at a loss for words. Peppermint looked at Nebula with eyes full of wonder. She couldn't help but poke Nebula in her arms and torso, Nebula flinching slightly every time she did so.
"Wooooooooah... Nebu Nebu, this is amazing. Like, hyper-mega-BOOM-amazing!"
"Ah! Wow, I could... feel that." Nebula looked down at her hand, turning it to look at it from every angle, "Wow... Jessie, you outdid... I think you outdid everyone with this. This is incredible!" Nebula was suddenly aware though, through this new sense of touch, that she was feeling something on her body; looking down, she saw a sterile white t-shirt, and a pair of white shorts. And around her neck....
"Hmm?" Nebula took what looked like a necklace off, and held it between her and Peppermint. The chain looked like it was made of polished silvrite, but hanging from the bottom was a tiny piece of gravite, framed by what looked like gold.
"It's so pretty, Nebu... She must have really loved you." Peppermint's eyes were practically sparkling as she spoke, a child-like awe in her voice.
"... I'm sure she still does, Pepper. But as long as she works for Devoid... I don't think I can go back to her." It was just another one of those things, that kept stacking on top of each other. She couldn't go back to Devoid, and she couldn't see Jessica again. Peppermint looked just as sad as Nebula. She knew what it felt like to be separated from people you cared about, and she didn't like it, nor did she like that Nebula was going through it, too. But she wanted to make her feel better, at least.
"...Hey! What if we got your mommy to leave Devoid? Then you could be together again!"
"... I don't know if there's a way to do that, Pepper." Again Peppermint pouted, as she really wanted her attempts to cheer up her new friend to, you know, work.
"Not with that attitude! I'm sure Winter can help us come up with something."
"... Well, maybe. But I.... don't know if she even wants to leave." Peppermint wanted to say something, but couldn't think of something good to say. So she simply hugged Nebula.
"You're... hugging me an awful lot, Pepper.” Nebula paused, for a moment, letting the moment linger for a moment, “... Thanks.”
"You're welcome." Peppermint hugged her for a little longer before letting go. "Let's go show Winter."
“.... Oh boy.” Nebula sighed, getting up, and teetering slightly; the new frame, the new skin... was different. And she had no idea how Winter would actually react to it.
“Well, better now than just letting him walk in on us. Pepp-" It was too late; the more childlike android had already bounded from the room, looking for Winter. As Nebula followed, there was an odd feeling on her feet too... this skin, this frame, whatever it was... this could let her live a relatively normal life. Maybe. But that was neither here nor now.
"Welp... now or never." Why was she so concerned about what he would think, again?

"Winter Winter" the small android burst out of the room to get his attention. "You have to see this, Winter!" The half-aren placed the newspaper down in his lap as Peppermint shouted.
"What is it, Peppermint?" Peppermint pointed happily to Nebula as she emerged from the guest room. Winter could only stare in wondrous confusion. "How in the world?"
"The Subdimensional Rift," she answered proudly.
"I see." He looked Nebula over from his recliner. It was a new kind of synthetic skin. It was highly convincing, at least to anyone who didn't have Aren eyes. "You could practically hide in plain sight. If we sever you completely from the network-"
"Done and done, Winter! It was super easy!" Peppermint jeered.
"Well, weren't you two busy?" Winter patted Peppermint's head for a job well done. "Nebula, remember when you asked me if we would be staying here in the Ruins? Well, I think this makes moving a whole lot safer."
"...We're moving?" Peppermint asked. She was kind of sad to leave this house. She lived in this house with Winter for years.
"Don't be so sad, Peppermint. We'll be moving to the Bridge."
"Yay! The Bridge is so cool!"
"First, however, I need to run a few errands. Peppermint, you're in charge while I'm gone. Nebula, is there anything you need me to do while I'm out?"

She was actually kind of surprised he asked. The fact that these people who she had barely known before were treating her so nicely... well, it felt good. However, she had to think; was there anything she needed? Not... particularly.
"I... don't really need anything. Just keep an eye out for anyone from Devoid, can you?" That was her main worry at the moment, after all.

"You're silly, Nebu~" Peppermint jeered. "Winter's always watching."
"I'll be back in a few hours. If anyone from the Order stops by, tell them their services are not required. And do not let them in." With that, the green-eyed aren left. Winter had one place he wanted to visit first. He knew his old mentor was capable of taking care of himself, but he wanted to see him, for old time's sake. He made his way to the Silver Chariot to see how the old orc was doing.
"...Soooooo, I have an idea," Peppermint said to Nebula. "Since your frame is much closer to mine now, wanna play dress up? We have WAY more options that'll work now!"

Nebula
She couldn't really find a reason to object this time; her frame was certainly far more compatible with human clothes, and they would help her blend in.
"Well, sure, why not Pepper? That sounds great!" It certainly helped that she was kinda interested in trying on some of the new clothes.

Winter made his way to The Silver Chariot, but when he arrived, he found a moving van parked in front of it, locked up and full of cargo. He knew Bulgrish was still inside, so he opened the door and found the bar stripped bare of all its decorations. Winter took a long, deep breath as he found Bulgrish sitting behind the bar for one last time in the emptied drinking bastion of service men.
"...It seems as if I wasn't the only who's thinking of moving," the green-eyed aren spoke up.
"...You know how many hours I put into this bar?" the old orc asked. "I don't. But it sure felt like a lot of hours."
"This place holds a lot of memories, and for more than just you or I." Winter approached the bar before sitting on the seat he often took. "...I can't begin to say how sorry I am for you, to see this place close like this. At least we can say it wasn't Devoid who took it."
"...Real talk, Winter? To hell with these undead cults. 'Providing comfort to the grief-stricken' my ass. If they offered the same deal to my people back in Argenon, you can bet they'd be slaughtered faster than they could print those obnoxious papers they've been sending to everyone."
"Humans and lamia grieve differently from orcs, as do they have different desires," Winter replied. "So many just want to take back what was stolen from them, no matter the cost. It's... amazing what people will do when they are desperate. But we both know better."
"Yeah. I suppose we do," Bulgrish sighed. "Magic like that disgraces the people who died. I respect those poor people too much to even consider stealing them from the rest they've earned."
"I'm afraid even I don't entirely agree with you," said the sniper. "To say that they earned their rest is almost to say that their lives ended accordingly. And while that may have been the case for McKensey... No man, woman, or child deserved what befell Grand Divide."
"Maybe not. But do you really want to take them away from that better place they've gone too? I sure don't."
"I never said that I would go so far. I am only saying that I understand why there are those who would. To be fair, I'm not sure many would appreciate the sudden change in scenery. It is hard to call it Paradise without those you love."
"We're all just waiting to die anyway," the old orc retorted. "If you're patient enough, your folks will eventually come around. That is, unless some moron decides to turn your loved ones into zombies forever."
"Speaking of those morons," Winter interjected. "I don't trust them for an instant. The way they secured their foothold here... It was too easy. Something smells very foul, and it isn't just the corpses."
"You're thinking they've got something to do with all of this." Bulgrish said this as less of a question and more of a comment.
"I can't say for certain, although we can agree that they wasted NO time in seizing this opportunity. It's as if they were waiting for it. As if they knew it was going to happen."
"You going to do anything about it?" the orc asked bluntly.
"Unfortunately, my hands seem to be filling more and more with each passing day. However, I can at least point a certain someone in the right direction."
"Who are you planning on tipping off, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Hmm~, I imagine she'd be a tad hurt if she wasn't the first one who came to your mind," Winter commented with a slight smile on his face. "Miss Vrak, of course. She seems to be entertaining an acquaintance of ours, by the way. Raiga no Kyuu. What's peculiar, though, is that the old relic appears to be escorting a slime, and said slime has earned Miss Vrak's deepest sympathies. I'm not sure where it is that the slime came from, but it suddenly appeared in Grand Divide a short time ago. The way it appeared was as if it was trying to escape. I fear it may be linked to the sudden disappearances that have been occuring for the last few years."
"Well, at least she's got quite a bit to go on so far." The orc made a rough noise which could only have been equated to a chuckle. It was hard for him to believe that the little girl who hung around the bar grew up into a woman with a badge.
"She's a young and passionate agent," Winter added. "I'm sure the two of us can get what we both want out of this. Do you happen to have any bottles on hand?" "One." Bulgrish brought out one bottle of an unlabeled concoction from under the table. "I was saving for this for the long drive to my new spot, but you take it. Not supposed to drink and drive anyway. No need for a glass. Just open the bottle and chug."
"That's no good. I wanted to make a toast, if you'll humor me."
"Use the bottle then, you putz. All the glasses are boxed up."
"Fine then, hold your fist out for me," Winter said as he took the bottle, and opened it. "To truth, justice, and peace. And to everyone who's ever walked through these doors." Bulgrish rolled his eyes as he held up his fist. He was likely just doing it to humor Winter. Winter cracked his knuckles against the orc's massive fist, before taking a draft of Bulgrish's secret cocktail.
"Well, I'll be off then. I'll visit when you've settled into your new pub."
"I'll look forward to it," the old orc added. "You take care of Yuro for me, okay? Make sure he knows how to fend for himself."
"Of course, Bulgrish. Perhaps I'll pay Yeoman a visit as well. Gods know he is handling this as terribly as the rest of us."
"Don't be too hard on him," Bulgrish said flatly.
"What reason is there to? No one could have stopped what has happened, least of all him."
"Just making sure you don't intend on losing your head around him."
"Fair enough. Until next time, Bulgrish."
"Later," the old orc parted. Winter smiled slightly as he left, though as he walked across the ruined street, his brow furrowed as he watched the vampire from before feasting on another lamia. He added it to the list of things he wanted to discuss with Miss Vrak. Winter looked at the bottle in his hand, thinking for a moment before deciding what he was going to do next. He turned in the direction of the cemetery, and began to walk. He decided he want to visit McKensey's grave.
The House of Willian Green
Peppermint laughed and giggled as she tried on clothes with Nebula. Peppermint's wardrobe was quite extensive for an android, and they mixed and matched to their hearts' content. As they played, the necklace Nebula wore continued to catch her attention, and Peppermint had to stop and ask. "Hey Nebu? What was your creator like? How did you live with her?"

It would be of great surprise for Winter, as he left the bar, to see two Arens walking toward him. One was young enough to possibly still be in high school, and wore black assassin's garments, while the other was... a little different, especially for his unique senses. She was an aren warrior almost certainly; the stitches and scars all over her body made that clear. But she was also pale for an aren, and cold. Devoid of life, as it were. She was an undead aren, and she greatly resembled the younger girl walking quietly behind her.
-Mileena-
It was a depressing thing to walk through so much death. No matter the situation, whether it was then, now, or even before, Mileena Zealan... very ironically, did not like to be around death.
Even though she was dead herself. Funny how that works.
However, now she was noticing someone coming out of a bar, and curiously enough...
"I think I recognize him, Arlee." Her daughter looked at him hard as they approached, and shrugged.
"My eyes are good, but they don't help in the deja vu department, mom." That quip ended up falling on deaf ears as Mileena suddenly realized who the man was, and the fact that, well... she kinda owed him and his mother alot.
"William!" It really was him, wasn't it? Naturally, people didn't change much in thirteen years. Mileena walked over, as it slowly dawned on Arlee who this man was.
"... oh wow. That guy lived. What are the odds." While not an overly joyous moment for her daughter... she was surprised, a just a touch pleased.
-Nebula-
Somehow, through the chaos, Nebula had ended up in a violet skirt, with a white turtleneck. It wasn't looking too great on her, but she was certain someone would make it look good. At least, that was her opinion on the subject, anyways.
"Jessica... um..." Nebula thought back, "We kinda just... talked alot. We laughed together, watched TV, I helped her with her work. She always treated me like a person, and I was always glad for it. I think its why I am like I am now, actually." Nebula turned in front of the mirror once with her current attire, and twisted her face up before sitting back down.
"... I'm not just going to forget that she lied to me all that time, though." She couldn't help but think of that. No idea why.

Winter turned his head in the direction of the two arens as they approached him. He was less surprised to see them and more surprised that they would approach him. He was slightly cautious of them though. "So, you recognize me after all. Though, I must confess I never thought we'd meet again like this." The green-eyed aren of course was referring to Mileena's zombified appearance. "I see you've revived your mother. As such, I'm curious as to why you are here. Are you associated with the Order of the Blessed Mother?" His posture and inflection conveyed nothing more than a curious inquiry, though behind his poker face he was studying them carefully. Winter had his doubts that they were members, but he steeled himself for if they gave him an unsatisfactory answer.
Peppermint frowned as Nebula brought up being lied to. "Nebu, don't be so bummed. Maybe she had a reason. If it makes you feel better, Peppermint will never lie to you... Intentionally. ...Sometimes I get bad information. The internet has lots of it." Peppermint was a little embarrassed admitting that she was gullible.
